Born in Zundert on March 30, 1853, Vincent Van Gogh profoundly influenced 20th century art.

He started drawing as a child, and despite his father's criticism he continued to draw until deciding to become a painter. He began painting late at the age of twenty-seven, painting many of his best-known works in the last two years of his life. His subjects consisted of self-portraits, landscapes, still lifes of flowers, paintings  cypresses, representations of wheat fields and sunflowers. He was influenced by the landscape realism of the Barbizon painters and the ethical and social message of Jean-François Millet.

After several years suffering from frequent mental disorders, he died in mysterious circumstances in 1890; the artistic importance of his works was recognized only after his death.
