Barcelona 1992 recorded a boom in participation with 9094 athletes competing from 172 countries. The anthem of the Olimpiade, Barcelona, was composed and sung by Freddie Mercury (who died the previous year), lead singer of Queen, together with the well-known Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé.
The Games began on July 25 and ended on August 9.
