The Prize
Ieuan Evans' worn tracksuit and socks, gifted from the 1993 Tour to New Zealand.
The 1993 Lions were the last of the amateur age and there was much drama and excitement to be found in their 2-1 Test Series defeat to New Zealand. Two Series losses and 22 years had gone by since the historic 1971 Tour, where the Lions notched up what is still their only Series victory on All Blacks' soil. But in this Tour they arguably came as close as any side before or since to repeating that feat, and, but for one penalty in the final minute of the first Test, they would have done.
These Tour items are donated from Ieuan Evans' personal collection. Ieuan played in three Lions Tours, earning six Test caps in 20 appearances. Among his most memorable moments were his four tries against the All Blacks in 1993, which helped make him the Lions top try scorer.
Evans also appeared 72 times for Wales and captained the team on 28 occasions. He also won the Heineken Cup with Bath Rugby in 1998.
In 2007 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame and seven years later he was introduced to the IRB/World Rugby Hall of Fame.
