GIUSEPPE VALARIOTI
Rosarno, 1st March 1950 - Nicotera, 11th June 1980
Giuseppe, a young man like many others, the son of farmers in the Gioia Tauro plain, grew up looking at the injustices affecting the peasants forced to submit to the yoke of the 'Ndrangheta. Militant and leader of the PCI, he continues his studies at the University of Messina, the teaching of history and philosophy at the high school of Rosarno and the study of Magna Graecia and the ancient city of Medma. In 1980 he worked on the provincial and regional offices for the election of his friend Peppino Lavorato. The rallies alternate between burnt cars and threats and culminate in an unexpected victory, torn apart by two deadly shots. His is the first political murder of the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria. Peppe wanted to speak to the young people. This is why he always said: “If we don't do it, who has to do it?”.
