Antoni Tapies was one of the leading figures in the Catalan artistic movement known as "International Informalism". He is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century.
After staying in Paris and New York, in 1948 he was among the first to join the Dau al Set movement, founded in Barcelona by the poet Joan Brossa.
In 1958 he presented a personal exhibition at the Venice Biennale. He went on to display his works at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris and at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
In 1990 the Antoni Tàpies Foundation was inaugurated in Barcelona.
