Niccolò Quaresima is a visual artist who mainly focuses on photography, in particular analogical. After graduating in New Technologies of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, Milan, he started attending the Master in Photography and Visual Design at NABA, Milan.
The Sculptures series consists of 26 untitled images, the same number as the letters of the alphabet, depicting empty photographic film. This project can be read in several different ways. It is a work that is the result of a period of self-isolation due to the global health emergency, a time of quarantine that forces those who use the photographic medium to rethink what photography itself is and what it means for those who produce it and those who look at it.
The first level of reading focuses on the subject of the images: photographic film without shots. This absence of photographs is ambivalent: on the one hand it refers to the difficulty of creating photographic images during isolation, on the other it reflects on the homologation of contemporary imagery and documentation, evident once again in the overabundance of reporting and superficial photographs that have been seen in this period (the deserted streets, the empty supermarkets, doctors with their faces marked by masks). The second level concerns the series as a whole.
26 images, 26 letters make up the international alphabet, 26 sculptural forms that rise up from the film itself. The intent is to create a minimalist alphabet of photography as a medium, a set of signs to reinterpret the reality that awaits us after the moment of great difficulty we are experiencing.
Project by Olimpia Rospigliosi curated by Bohdan Stupak. Between 14 and 22 July it will be possible to view the works exclusively on appointment at the Studio Rospigliosi in Piazza Borromeo 10 in Milan, Italy.
