The Prize

We are thrilled to offer this brass pearl snare drum, signed in May 2022 by the legendary Topper Headon of The Clash. It is one of Topper’s favourite drums, used at the last gig he ever played in Canterbury.

Topper joined The Clash in 1977, being hailed by the band as a vital part of their success. His technical prowess emphasised a simple bass-snare up-down beat, accentuated with closed hi-hat flourishes. His drumming on ‘Train in Vain’ has been characterised as one of the most important and distinctive beats in rock music.

The Clash are an English rock band, who formed in London in 1976 and soon became the most iconic band of their era, a symbol of intelligent protest and stylish rebellion in the turbulent years of the late 70s and early 80s. Integrating reggae, dub, funk, jazz and hip hop into their music helped to make them one of the most respected and sampled bands by modern DJs and musicians.

We are incredibly grateful to Topper for his kind donation.

The funds raised from this auction will contribute towards Music Support’s core services, including our peer-led confidential Helpline that saw a 60% increase in volume of calls during the Global Pandemic.
