The Who Multi Platinum Award "Quadrophenia"
This auction is for the multi-platinum award that was presented to The Who to recognise the worldwide sales of their album 'Quadrophenia'.
The Who are an English rock band that formed in 1964, and they released their sixth studio album, Quadrophenia, in 1973. The album is about 'the mods' and their subculture, set against the violent clashes with the rival subculture, the 'rockers', in early 1960s Britain; the story follows a young mod called Jimmy, and his search for self-worth and importance in London and Brighton in 1965. The album was the Who's highest charting, at No.2 in both the UK and the US, and is the only album to be entirely composed by the group's leader, Pete Townshend.
Platinum discs are awarded to artists for achieving a certain number of copies sold, which varies from country to country. This award is for worldwide sales, for which the album has achieved multi-platinum status. The plaque reads:
