"The marathon of '92"

- A4, edition of 25, signed

Few people know that one of the strangest sporting events in the world took place in the summer of 1892, in London. That year, the population was prevented from leaving their homes due to a strong thickening of coal dust in the air, seriously endangering the smooth running of the historic marathon that animated the city every year.

On the morning of May 20, 1892 Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone informed the country that the nation's most important sporting event would take place and invited the people to take part in the race ... from home. Every runner, armed with a stopwatch, calculated how long it took them to run 45 kilometers moving from the kitchen to the bathroom and back again, and from the dining room to the living room and back again.

The winner was Sir John Hack, who covered 45 kilometers in just 3 hours and 23 minutes by running round his apartment of just 25 square meters.

Alice Piaggio was born in Genoa, but raised in Bogliasco, a small village frequented by surfers and fishermen. In 2014 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and in the same year she moved to Urbino where, in 2017, she graduated for a second time from the ISIA illustration course.

She lives in Ticino, Switzerland, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, green meadows and chestnut woods. Winner of the 2019 Illustri Prize in the Magazine and Newspaper category, she is co-founder of PELO magazine and collaborates with Italian and international magazines and publishing houses.
