Sergio Colombo was born in Varese in 1929. He is a student of the painter Giuseppe Talamoni. As a young man, he earned a living as a graphic artist, specializing in the correction and retouching of photographs. Passionate about the human figure and a sensitive interior portraitist, as an adult he concentrated his attention on the pictorial details of the Varese landscape of which he seeks out the known and less-known parts and portrays them with fond loyalty. 

He has presented at more than two hundred personal and collective shows, and numerous monographs have been written about his work, some of which have been focused specifically on certain places in the province: Il Sacro Monte, Cairate, the railways, Villa Recalcati, Villa della Porta Bozzolo, Induco Olona. In 2000 he painted four large triangular panels for the squinches of the dome in the Church of Sant’Antonio di Padova alla Brunella in Varese.
