Orfeo Tamburi was born in Jesi in Italy and graduated from the local Istituto Tecnico in 1926. In 1928 he went to study in Rome and completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1936, where he was influenced by Cezanne.

He later returned to Italy to work with the Roman theatres and he took part in the Quadriennale di Roma and later the Biennale di Venezia. After the Second World War he returned to Paris and proceeded to travel extensively in Europe where he exhibited in Belgium, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands.  

In the 1960s, he traveled to the United States, and gained a commission to photograph some American cities for the journal Fortune.  

Back in Europe, he presented his works at an increasing number of exhibitions in all of the most important Italian cities.
