Salvatore Fiume was a painter, sculptor, writer set designer whose first official exhibition was held in Milan in the Galleria Borromini in 1949. In 1953, “Life” and “Time” magazines both commissioned a series of works for their New York branches depicting an imaginary story in Manhattan and the New York Bay which Fiume reinvented as islands of statues.
In 1962, an itinerant exhibition brought 100 paintings by Fiume to a variety of museums throughout Germany including in the cities of Cologne and Regensburg and in 1985 he held a great art exhibition in Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome.
His works can be found in some of the most important museums in the world such as the Vatican Museums, the Ermitage Museum of St Petersburg, the MoMA in New York, the Puškin Museum in Moscow and the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan. A large retrospective of 207 pieces was held between 2007 and 2008 in the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Arezzo marking a decade since his death.
