About the artist
René François Ghislain Magritte (21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. Along with Paul Delvaux he is considered the greatest Belgian surrealist painter. After first coming into contact with Cubism and Futurism, his style began to focus on a very accurate depiction technique based on trompe l'oeil, on a par with Salvador Dalí and Delvaux, but without recourse to the paranoid symbology of the former or the erotic-ancientizing symbology of the latter. René Magritte is also known as le saboteur tranquille, the silent disturber, because of his ability of planting doubt on reality thanks to the representation of reality itself. His artistic work doesn’t approach reality in order to interpret it, nor to depict it, but to show their indefinable mystery. With his work Magritte wants to allude to the whole as a mystery without defining it.
