Magritte was a Belgian painter.
Together with Paul Delvaux he is considered the greatest Belgian surrealist painter. After initially moving towards Cubism and Futurism, his style later focused on a very accurate depiction technique based on trompe l'oeil, on a par with Salvador Dalí and Delvaux, but without recourse to the paranoid symbology of the former or the erotic-ancientizing of the latter.
But René Magritte, also known as le saboteur tranquille, that is the silent disturber, due to his ability to insinuate doubts about what is real through the representation of reality itself, did not want to interpret or portray reality but instead demonstrate its indefinable mystery. The intention of his work is to allude to the whole as a mystery without defining it.
