Title: Remembering the Twin Towers, with love

Date: September 11, 2002

Artist: Mauro Sioli

40x50cm

It is September 11, 2002, the first anniversary of the terrorist attack that destroyed the Twin Towers and unleashed the American invasion of Afghanistan. In the courtyard of the psychiatric hospital in Kabul, a group of humanitarian associations meet to commemorate the 3,000 victims of New York. The noise of the traffic is muffled, from time to time you hear shouts from the inmates. Bearded males take turns at a small lectern. They speak of peace, understanding, the fight against terrorism by Al Qaeda and the Taliban. The women, about ten of them, are all together on the shaded side of the courtyard. They are all wearing the burqa even though it is no longer mandatory, even though among them there are nurses and doctors who have returned to work after the years of the Taliban's ban. A strange noise comes out from under the burqa of one of them. It is a faint cry of fatigue. The woman frees the little face of a baby boy or girl of just a few months old from the blue nylon and caresses it. A few seconds and the baby falls asleep again. Today that baby should be coming of age, in the prime of youth. Unless he or she is among the 3,000 Afghan civilians who, on average, have been killed by the war in Afghanistan every year for twenty years.
