The Prize

Print 40 x 30 cm

March 1991, Brindisi, Italy

At the time I was just a geology student with a passion for photography living in Brindisi. I was called by a friend of mine, now a photographer for the Quotidiano di Puglia, who told me that "something incredible" was happening at the port. When I got to the dock I realized that what was happening was going to be part of history. Two ships had arrived with more than 20,000 Albanians on board who had "flooded" the port. I started taking my first "journalistic" photos without knowing that what I had before my eyes would change my life and my professional path. That day I decided to become a photojournalist.
