Marco Bortolami was born in Padua on 12 June 1980, he began his rugby career in Petrarca Padua where he played until 2004.

He made his debut in the Italian national team at the age of 20, wearing the blue shirt for 114 matches, an absolute record reached on 14 February 2015 against England in the 6 Nations tournament.
In 2001 at just 21, he became the youngest captain in the history of rugby in the match against the All Blacks, in which he scored his first goal for the national team.
On 9 June 2012 against Argentina he achieved the record of 38 appearances as captain of Italy, after leading the Azzurri to historic successes in the 6 Nations such as the two consecutive victories over Scotland and Wales in 2007, and the first victory in Argentina against the Pumas in 2006.
He played in the Italian league, then in the French and English leagues, always in role of captain for all the teams in which he has played.
Marco wrote “Vita da Capitano” ("A Captain's Life"), an autobiography that tells the story of his life as a player and as a man.
Since July 2016 he has been the coach of Benetton Rugby and the Under 18 academy of Treviso.

In addition, he has been an ambassador for Care&Share Italia Onlus ONG for many years.
