Mark Kostabi was born into a family of Estonian immigrants in California, where he spent his early years, in the town of Whittier. He went on to study drawing and painting at California State University. In 1982 he moved to New York and from 1984 he began to establish himself as an important figure within the East Village art movement. Over that period he focussed his work on the provocative use of the mass media by delving into contemporary art themes.

Kostabi is best known for his paintings of faceless figures who often comment on political, social and psychological issues related to contemporary society, whose stylistic and visual roots can be traced to the work of Giorgio de Chirico and Fernand Léger. In addition to art exhibitions , Kostabi has designed numerous record covers for internationally renowned musicians.
