Caroline Pera, "Life Cycle", 2019.
Oil on linen canvas, 100x140 cm.
Caroline Pera is a Franco-American artist, born in Milan in 1987. She studied at Central St. Martins in London and currently lives in Milan. She uses art and aestheticism as a psychological and anthropological research tool in her portraits.
In the works of this artist, an almost scientific approach to paintings prevails: she collects, documents and amalgamates different elements of a subject, in order to create a portrait, as if it were a puzzle. The artist behaves like an anthropologist, integrating herself into a community to interact with her subjects and acquire authentic visual information. The portrait provides the artist and the viewer with a whole world of personal memories, emotions and stories.
This artwork is part of the Viva la Vulva by Nuvenia project: a collective exhibition by international artists that aims to break down taboos linked to the female body in conjunction with an online charity auction in favor of the Italian Red Cross. The works will be on display at Six Gallery in Milan from 9 to 11 October.
"We are born free from taboos. We live in a society that forces them upon us, feeding stereotypes. Talking about them helps to break them down and learn to accept each other: because we are all perfect precisely because we are different".
