Born in West Baden Springs on December 7, 1956, Larry Joe Bird was one of the greatest basketball players in NBA history. Along with rival and friend Magic Johnson, Bird made an indelible mark on NBA basketball throughout the 1980s, earning the nickname "The Legend". Chosen as the sixth overall draft pick by the Boston Celtics, he alternated in the roles of big forward and small forward.
The 1985/86 season marked the 15th ring for the Celtics, who won the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference with a record 67-15. In the playoffs they won the first round against the Chicago Bulls, the conference semifinal against the Atlanta Hawks and the conference final against the Milwaukee Bucks, winning the title when they defeated the Houston Rockets in the NBA final. Larry Bird was elected MVP for the third consecutive time.
