"L'alluvione di Firenze" by Antonello Arena, 1996.
This artwork is acrylic on canvas, 45 x 99 cm, depicting Florence during the great flood of November 1966. Arena, still a child, was in Florence in that period and never forgot those dramatic moments that he evoked on this canvas many years later.
Antonello Arena is one of the biggest names on the Italian contemporary art scene and exponent of Venice Biennale 1988.
At a young age Arena became part of the Nouveau Réalisme movement based in Nice, France, created by Pierre Restany, one of the greatest European art critics of the 20th Century, and followed by Mimmo Rotella, Christo, Arman and many other artists who went on to become famous.
It was, in fact, Restany who described Arena as being "the most innovative Italian artist of the middle generation".
Arena is also artist to the stars. Recently, he was commissioned to create a sculpture for the beachfront of Salina in memory of the legendary actor Massimo Troisi.
