About the artist
Aldo Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, 26 December 1911 – Rome, 18 January 1987) was an Italian painter and politician, incorrectly named among the leading figures of socialist realism, instead he was a protagonist of Italian neorealist painting that was given full expression by the New Front of the Arts artists, and a senator from 1976 to 1983. His art, linked to expressionism, was also characterized by strong social commitment, which led him to taking on a political role as a senator of the Italian Communist Party for two terms, under the secretariat of Enrico Berlinguer.
