Giulia Maria Belli, "Idea Coatta", series of two monotypes in oil on paper, 21 x 29,7 cm each (26 x 36 cm framed), 2020.

Giulia Maria Belli was born in Udine in 1989, the city where she lives and works. In 2020 she took part in Global Print, Douro Biennial of Engraving in Portugal, while in 2019 she exhibited in Cremona for the SUPER exhibition. In 2018 she presented Moira, her first personal exhibition, at Laboratory 09 in Vicenza. He has taken part in group exhibitions at the Caterina Tognon Gallery, Magazzini del Sale and the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice, as well as at the UnSmoke Systems Artspace in Pittsburgh, the Piramida in Tirana, the National Art Gallery in Cetinje in Montenegro and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rijeka in Croatia. With the Fondazione Malutta collective of young artists she presented her works at the museum of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, and later exhibited in Il gemello Cattivo and at the Monitor Gallery in Rome, in 2018, with the Torre Maluttona-Mercato babelico exhibition.

My research starts from a constant gathering of images, photographs and small objects that I have found or collected. Starting from this collection I then create the drawings, paintings and installations. In addition to oil painting and the use of fabrics, one of my favorite techniques is the monotype, the only printing method that cannot be reproduced in more than one copy. The jagged contour makes the image evanescent, ambiguous and similar to a distant memory. Each drawing in this series, Idea Coatta, is inspired by erotic and pornographic videos. I want to give an aesthetic value to an image that in itself has a completely different purpose, highlighting details that are otherwise ignored such as props, positions, settings and subtle psychological reflections of the actors, in this case autoeroticism.

This artwork is part of the Viva la Vulva by Nuvenia project: a collective exhibition by international artists that aims to break down taboos linked to the female body in conjunction with an online charity auction in favor of the Italian Red Cross. The works will be on display at Six Gallery in Milan from 9 to 11 October.

"We are born free from taboos. We live in a society that forces them upon us, feeding stereotypes. Talking about them helps to break them down and learn to accept each other: because we are all perfect precisely because we are different".
