The Prize

50x50 cm open edition print on Hahnemuhle Photorag Satin paper.

A boat made by a Palestinian prisoner floats on the Dead Sea in Palestine.

Nearly 4,200 Palestinians are being held in Israeli prisons, many of them with extremely long sentences, ranging from 20 years upwards.

Conjugal visits are denied and physical contact is prohibited. This is what prompted prisoners with the longest sentences to hide their seminal fluid in makeshift objects to send it out of prison and allow their wives to carry out IVF treatment. In February 2021, Middle East Monitor reported that 96 Palestinian babies were born using this procedure.

The boat is a recurring symbol in the Quran. It is the means by which two lovers are able to emotionally bridge the physical distance that separates them. During their stay in prison, Palestinian prisoners make objects with cardboard and beads to give to their families. Among the most common objects are boats, a message of positivity and hope of reunion.
