Artwork by Pizzi Cannella
Mixed media on paper.
Dimensions: 38 x 55 cm
Born in 1955 in Rocca di Papa, Pizzi Cannella lives and works in Rome.
From 1974 to 1977, Cannella attended painting lessons held by Alberto Ziveri at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome and, at the same time, he enrolled in the Philosophy course in La Sapienza University. For over thirty years, memory is the recurring element of the artist’s creative process and is expressed with a refined and enigmatic language, often cryptic and loaded with exoteric symbolism. In the early ‘80s, Cannella started focusing on daily domestic objects, such as jewels, clothes, tables, dry flowers, chairs, fans, lizards and amphoras.
In 1982, he built up his office in the former Cerere pasta factory in the San Lorenzo district, thus giving life to the “Scuola di San Lorenzo” (San Lorenzo School) alongside Bruno Ceccobelli, Gianni Dessì, Giuseppe Gallo, Nunzio and Marco Tirelli. Together with them, the artist took part in several collective exhibitions, among which Ateliers in 1984 (curated by Achille Bonito Oliva). Over the years, he has had many solos in private galleries, both in Italy and abroad, such as those in Rome at the Mucciaccia Gallery curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi in 2012 and, in 2014, the exhibition at the Partners & Mucciaccia Gallery in Singapore.
