In addition to using his beloved rat motif, Banksy’s Gangsta Rat combines his signature techniques of spray-paint and monochrome stencilling techniques to become the visual exemplification of his style and oeuvre. First editioned in 2004, the print evokes New York underground style, popular in the UK in the 1980s and 90s, in the monochrome rat’s attire: a New York Mets baseball cap, a chain necklace, and a ghetto blaster on his shoulder.
Now available in many colourways, produced and released through the years, it epitomizes Banksy’s fluency in the visual language of pop culture’s nostalgia, and his ability to capitalise on it to make enduring artwork.
Dismaland was a temporary art project organised by street artist Banksy in the seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. Prepared in secret, the pop-up exhibition at the Tropicana, a disused lido, was "a sinister twist on Disneyland" that opened during the weekend of 21 August 2015 and closed on 27 September 2015, 36 days later. Banksy described it as a "family theme park unsuitable for children".
