“I was in the Dandora landfill, in the heart of the city of Nairobi.
Thousands of people live here, especially children called "chokora", a word which in Swahili means "refuse".
Garbage, waste, is the only sustenance and source of income for these people. The women portrayed here, despite their terrible situation, told me about their lives and their experiences and agreed to be captured smiling. An exchange, an encounter, some dialogue: across the world they are ways to connect with others. I will always remember the beauty and profound dignity of these women”.
Shot taken from the CHOKORA project THE JAR THAT WANTED TO PLAY by Valentina Tamborra and Mario De Santis for Amref Health Africa.
