Take home this stunning photograph by Filipe Casiraghi in support of the TartaLove project by Legambiente.

For every surfer, every wave is precious, and it's the same for turtles. For both, their journey begins with a wave and continues between the waves. For the turtle it is a feat to be born, to reproduce, to catch the first wave that will finally take it from the shoreline to the sea. And even once it's at sea it may not be safe due to the upheaval that man has brought to the Earth. The relationship between man and nature is at the heart of the artist's project. Entering into relationship with the world through travel and discovery, a destination without borders in the deep blue.

The photograph can be printed, depending on the winner's indications, on CANSON® INFINITY BARYTA PHOTOGRAPHIQUE II MATT 310 paper in A2 (42x59.5cm) or A3+ (33x48cm) format with an elegant white passepartout. Cansor Baryta Photographique II Matt is made on a photographic alpha-cellulose base which gives it the authentic feel of a darkroom paper, exceptional contrast and at the same time a wide color range. The print with the artist's signature on the back is certified by GD FINE ART PRINT certified Canson print lab.

Filipe Casiraghi is a Milanese photographer born in 1990. He lives and breathes photography by exploring different sectors: reportage, commercial and portraiture. With his projects in the naturalistic and landscape fields, he gives his shots to NPOs to support environmental awareness campaigns. "I always try to bring the beauty and power of Nature to the eye of the beholder. Photography is a useful tool to help us reflect on how we can preserve it."

The Cause

The commitment of Legambiente for the protection of Mediterranean sea turtles

Every year thousands of sea turtles of the Caretta caretta species die trapped in fishing nets or because of the hooks for swordfish fishing, sheared by boats and suffocated by plastic waste that has now invaded the Mediterranean sea. A protected species is thus seriously threatened. Moreover sea turtles have a huge difficulty in finding beaches suitable for nesting due to overbuilding, light pollution and noise pollution.

Legambiente has been working for years in safeguarding these animals with recovery and care activities, nest monitoring, information and awareness activities. Some studies estimate that every year in Italy over 40,000 sea turtles are caught accidentally during professional fishing activities and about 10,000 sea turtles do not survive. With the aim of reducing the mortality of these animals, Legambiente has set up Recovery and First Aid Centres: they are a sort of hospitals where sea turtles are treated and cared until the moment when they can return to the sea. Over 1,600 specimens have been saved in the last 10 years thanks to the Recovery and First Aid Centres managed by the association.

Every year hundreds of volunteers, the “Tartawatchers”, patrol the Italian coasts throughout the summer in order to identify and protect the Caretta caretta nests. The Tartawatchers look for and follow the tracks left by the mother turtles to then identify the oviposition sites to be secured and protected until the hatchling of the little eggs.
