Born in 1882 in Nyack, a small town on the Hudson River, Hopper spent almost all of his life in New York, until his death in 1967.

American painter and illustrator who was a leading figure in American realism, famous for his paintings of solitude in the American way, Hopper always repeats the same subjects in his paintings, all inspired by the city and the American landscape: isolated houses by a railway or by the sea, petrol pumps, night images of cities, hotel interiors with people waiting motionless.
