Born in Bivange in Luxembourg in 1879, Steichen emigrated with his family to the United States of America two years after his birth and in 1900, after turning eighteen, he became a US citizen.
Trained as a fine arts painter, at the beginning of the 20th century he came to photography by embracing the pictorialist movement which aimed to raise this technique to the level of the other visual arts and of which he would become one of the most significant figures.
After World War I, during which he was in command of the photographic division of the American Expeditionary Forces, Steichen returned to direct photography and later moved into fashion photography. In 1932, his first color photographic cover for Vogue was released.
During World War II, he held the position of director of the naval photographic institute. His war documentary The Fighting Lady won the 1945 Academy Award for Best Documentary.
From the postwar period until 1962, he was director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
