Founded in 1946 by the designer Pierre Alexandre Claudius Balmain, Balmain's style is characterized by an edgy look, designed for elegant but sassy women. The first fashion show was met with immediate success thanks to its minimal luxury with an exotic touch. The brand's creations fully embodied the elegant and refined style of the 40s and 50s, so much so that his line was nicknamed "Jolie Madame".

After the death of Pierre Balmain in June 1982, the role of creative director passed to Erik Mortensen, a Danish designer and Balmain's companion, but the maison was unable to recover and in 1990 he was replaced by Hervé Pierre. Finally it was the American Oscar de la Renta to revive the maison, working from 1992 to 2002. This is when Balmain established itself as a recognizable brand with a classic and luxurious style. After de la Renta came various designers with Christophe Decarnin arriving in 2006, bringing a rock-chic aesthetic designed for It Girls.

In 2011 came a second important creative turning point when the Balmain maison decided to take a risk on the 25-year-old Olivier Rousteing, its current creative director, whose idea was to rethink the rock aesthetics of his predecessor without neglecting the past for return to an idea of contemporary luxury, based on quality and customer enjoyment.
