Bernard Aubertin was born in 1934 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France.

In the 1950s he was among the founders and animators of the "Zero Group" in Düsseldorf in which Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Lucio Fontana, Enrico Castellani, Otto Piene, and Günter Ueker, among others, participated. His first red monochromes date from this period.

His artistic activity initially took place in Paris and then from the 1970s in Brest and for long periods between Brescia and Verona. Since 1990 he lived and worked in Reutlingen, Germany, with frequent stays in Brescia.

In addition to his "monochromes," he is known for his use of burning different materials and objects, from books to musical instruments to model cars.

His notoriety is due both to his "dessin de feu" collages of matches, variously arranged in geometric shapes on a cardboard background and which he afterwards set on fire, obtaining a very striking result, and to his performances in which he burned pianos and real cars. Aubertin died Reutlingen, Germany, on August 31, 2015.
