Vautier was born in Naples in 1935 and he travels between Turkey, Egypt and Greece before settling in Nice. During this time, he began his artistic research as self-taught: he loves all that could be shock and surprise in the spectator. His whole career is inspired by Marcel Duchamp. At the end of the 1950s he started with "appropriations", signing everything that had not been recognized for artistic paternity: the validity criteria of a work of art were for Vautier the novelty and the exaltation-affirmation of the ego. In the 1960s he moved to London where he took part to Fluxus group. He became internationally famous during the 1970s, because his works are included exhibitions of prestigious museums such as the Guggenheim of New York.
