Artwork by André Derain (1880-1954)

He was born in Chatou in 1880 and died in Garches in 1954. In 1897 he met Maurice de Vlaminck Derain with whom he opened a studio in Chatou. In 1905 he participated in the group exhibition of the Fauves at the Salon d'Automne and in 1907 he painted "Les Bagneuses" and began to devote himself to sculpture.

Following an artistic crisis, he destroyed part of its production, dedicating himself to the study of the classics first Italian in the Louvre, then to the study of Cezanne and Cubism.

Around 1911 Derain became interested in painting of primitive Africa, and Rousseau. After the First World War he executed sets and numerous illustrations. In 1920 he moved to the south of France. Since then, his painting turned to realism expressed through paintings of nude, portraits, still-life.

In 1935 he moved to Chambourey painting landscapes of the Ile de France, free compositions of mythological themes and fantastic sculptures on display until after his death. The work of Derain, among the most unusual and complex of the twentieth century, is characterised by dramatically conflicting influences of classical art and the charm of primitive art.
