Take home the "Marylin" artwork by Giovanni Sesia!

Artist: Giovanni Sesia

Title: Marylin
Dimensions: 40x40cm
Year: 2023
Technique: mixed media on panel

Giovanni Sesia was born in Magenta (Milan) in 1955. After attending the Brera Academy he began to create paintings characterized by accentuated chromaticism and strong lines. Subsequently, his painting develops on tonal research and on the contrast between light and shadow, working between gestural abstract and figurative suggestions. It is in this period that he approaches photography as a technical means to complement pictorial expressiveness. The artist manages to achieve a perfect balance between the two expressive languages, so that one helps the other to overcome its limits.

The turning point came at the end of the 1990s when he came into possession of an old photographic archive of an abandoned psychiatric hospital. The images chosen by Sesia evoke history and memory and this tendency has led him to favor more and more faces, places and objects.

For the artist, photography becomes a pretext on which all his instinct and artistic research are triggered and the balance that the work transmits is given by the brushstrokes and handwriting, signs that create a synergy between full and empty spaces, but in perfect combination with each other. From the ancient plates found in mental hospitals, to the old images found, to the shots he took, the chosen subjects appear distant and familiar at the same time and have the strength to penetrate the soul and ask not to be forgotten. Sesia redeems them from oblivion and offers them to those who look at them with respectful love.

The subjects, chosen with extreme care and passion, are ancient and atavistic and the path in which Sesia moves is inevitably steeped in tradition.
