L'inspire by Marc Chagall
Original Lithograph, 54 x 64cm (in frame)
This auction lot will be closed at the live Love & Life charity auction on Saturday 17 October 2015 at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village. Please read the Live Bidding Conditions below for more information.
Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985) was a Russian-French artist. An early modernist his expansive career covered works in almost every single artistic medium. He was described by his biographer Wellschalger as ‘a pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters,,, [who] invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the twentieth century.’
Chagall’s artworks perfectly sums up the theme of the auction ‘love and life’. The historians Walther and Metzger summarised this when they said of him that he was ‘a citizen of the world with much of the child still in him, a stranger lost in wonder… Profoundly religious and with a deep love of the homeland, his work is arguably the most urgent appeal for tolerance and respect of all that is different that modern times could make.’
