The Prize
"View of Ayr" (Scotland). 1830. Hand colored etching by William Miller.
Dimensions: 9x14 cm
William Miller, engraver and watercolourist, was born in Edinburgh in 1796 and died in Sheffield in England in 1882.
Miller became an apprentice to William Archibald in 1814. His first engraving (an apple tree) was published that year in Vol. I of the Caledonian Horticultural Society. After spending four years with William Archibald, he opened his own workshop. At the end of 1819 he moved to Hackney to join George Cooke's workshop. Here, Miller drew a series of plants from the nearby Loddiges nursery, etched by Cooke and published in the volumes of Loddiges Botanical Cabinet.
Miller was one of JMW Turner's chief engravers. Miller's large single prints post-Turner include The Grand Canal for Hodgson and Graves, 1837; Modern Italy for FG Moon, published in the presentation for the National Art Union in 1843; the Rhine, Osterprey and Feltzen for DT White in 1852.
His last work was a series of illustrations for two volumes of Thomas Hood's poems.
