29 x 22 x 14 cm sculpture in resin, made in Toulouse France, 1996.
Brazilian by birth but settled in France in 1981, João Monteiro was the artist invited by the city of Toulouse during the World Cup in France. Immediately, the correlation between the motions of football and classical Greco-Roman statues were inescable to Monteiro.
This is one of the first pieces he made dealing with the ballet of football, which he saw as an expression of the Brazilian people—people with tough living, yet full of grace and energy. Monteiro uses the broken parts to allude to the passing of time and to accentuate the volume in space, portraying the beauty and elegance of typical Brazilian gestures.
