Franco Baresi, born Franchino Baresi (Travagliato, 8 May 1960), is a sports manager, football coach and former Italian footballer who played as a defender, honorary vice president of AC Milan. Nicknamed Piscinin and later Kaiser Franz, in honor of Franz Beckenbauer, he is considered one of the strongest players in history and has a place among the best known football stalwarts of all time. He occupies 19th place in the special ranking of the best footballers of the 20th century published by World Soccer magazine and 33rd place in the homonymous ranking compiled by the IFFHS. In March 2004, Pelé also included him in the FIFA 100, the list of the 125 best living players, drawn up on the occasion of the FIFA centenary. He was nominated seven times to win the Ballon d'Or, from 1988 to 1990 and from 1992 to 1995, finishing second in 1989 behind teammate Marco van Basten. On 16 December 1999, on the occasion of the party organized to celebrate Milan's 100th anniversary, he was elected "Milan player of the century" by the fans, i.e. the most significant player in AC Milan's history, while in 2013 he joined the Hall of Fame of Italian football.
