Protezione Civile per l'emergenza Coronavirus

The Civil Protection Department was founded in 1982 to provide the country with an organization capable of mobilizing and coordinating all national resources capable of ensuring assistance to the population in the event of serious emergency. The dramatic delay in relief and the lack of coordination seen in the management of the 1980 earthquake in Irpinia highlighted the need to establish a structure that would deal with civil protection on a permanent basis.

Under law no. 225 of 1992, the National Civil Protection Service was founded with the Department becoming the hub for activities of managing, promoting and coordinating the entire system. Today the civil protection legislation comes under the new Civil Protection Code (Legislative Decree 1/2018).

The Department, working closely with the Regions and the autonomous Provinces, deals with all activities aimed at predicting and preventing risks, helping and assisting populations affected by disasters to fight and overcome states of emergency.
