#WeForShe – Fooball jerseys to fight violence against women

For the match played on November 25, the Spezia Calcio players wore shirts bearing the #WeForShe tag. Now they’re up for sale. All proceeds will donated to Differenza Donna.

One of the world’s most pressing issues is violence against women. It’s important that the whole of society comes together to raise awareness and push to eradicate the problem. People are particularly sensitive to the issue on November 25, international day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a date that is marked by numerous initiatives to support this truly important cause.

#WeForShe and Lo Spezia Calcio’s initiatives

A great way of raising awareness is for celebrities and sports stars to use their voice to fight violence against women. This year, on November 25, Spezia Calcio launched the #WeForShe motion. To mark this important day, the Ligurian club played the 14th match day of Serie A against Bologna at the Stadio Alberto Picco in jerseys bearing the motion’s hashtag.

The jerseys worn by the Spezia Calcio players are unique items that were later put up for auction with proceeds going to Differenza Donna, a non-profit organization operating on the national and international territory to fight violence against women, as well as central hub for the toll free number 1522 against Violence and Stalking.

This important and valuable initiative also involves Rahila Say, a young Afghan girl who’s been welcomed to the Region of Liguria after fleeing her homeland. Rahila spent the whole day with the communications team at Spezia Calcio and received recognition from the Club’s management, representing all women who are forced to experience unimaginable situations every day.

The initiative was welcomed with enthusiasm by the entire team, particularly Spezia Calcio’s President Philip Platek who stated during an interview:

“Being able to make a concrete contribution is a source of great pride for us (...) we believe we’re capable of making a real difference, and it’s important that we give our support. We hope to follow up this small gesture with many others because, like a football match, we can only achieve victory if we work together as a team. #WeForShe”.
