Sic, the biographical docufilm on Simoncelli
On December 21 the docufilm “Sic” about the life of great MotoGP champion Marco Simoncelli – produced by Sky, Fremantle Italy and Mowe - had its premiere in Riccione, Italy. The screening was an emotional and moving event for the audience, which included the champion’s family members and the motorbike racer Valentino Rossi who has recently retired from professional racing.
Ten years after the young rider’s death, a documentary about his life has been produced, not to fill the void but to remember and retrace his journey on hte big screen. The director Alice Filippi has brought is smile into movie theaters in an authentic tribute to Marco’s true spirit.
“It’s a really nice film about our Marco. I’m happy with it and I’d recommend it to anyone who loved him to go and see it”, says his father Marco, visibly moved.
Ten years have passed since Marco Simoncelli’s promising career in MotoGP was tragically cut short by one fatal bend on the track. The screening was marked by an outpouring of emotion from his friends and family, a vivid display of the pride and affection that many had for Marco.
All the items used on set during shooting have been put up for auction with proceeds going to support the Simoncelli Foundation. It’s a unique chance for MotoGP fans and for all those who were glued to the screen, heart in mouth, when Marco Simoncelli would take to the track, a young man who dreamt of becoming a world champion and then succeeded.
The auction lots, like the docufilm, retrace the most important milestones in Simoncelli’s life and career, from mini-bikes to MotoGP, as well as motocross training with Valentino Rossi. These race suits, helmets and accessories were all used by actors, taking to the track to tell Marco’s story.
Marco’s career and his passion for motorbikes began at a young age with mini-bikes. Encouraged by his father, at the age of 7 he started competing and by the age of 12 he was Italian mini-bike champion.
It was a long journey to reach MotoGP. In 2002 Marco made his debut in the 125-class world championship with Aprilia, later moving to Bravo, but he didn’t stay in 125 for long and in 2006 he moved to 250 with Gilera and in 2008 he won the world title.
Between 250 and MotoGP, Sic was asked to replace an injured Nakano in the Superbike race in Imola. This contest turned out to be an important turning point in Marco’s career because he stunning performance made life particularly difficult for Max Biaggi, who was competing for the title.
In 2010 he made the big move to MotoGP with Honda in the San Carlo Gresini team, where he stayed to the end. This is where it all finishes, too soon, with 152 GP appearances, 14 victories and 15 pole positions.
