Title of the painting: The Smile of Peace

In 2013, Liu Yi was nominated for the ‘Primo Cavaliere di Pace Asiatico’ award in Assisi for his work. He worked on the 'La Strada della Seta di Marco Polo' ('Marco Polo and the Silk Road') project about the relationship between Marco Polo, Italy, China and the trade route, the Silk Road. As he grew up in China and studied in the Italian university, Marangoni, he was able to help hugely with this project. Through his art, he has been able to portray subjects such as global peace and the cultural exchange between east and west. Liu Yi has been able to work with important associations such as Icomos and Unesco.

The Marco Polo project is hugely important for Liu Yi as he wants to bring these two geographically distant countries closer together. He sees a simalarity between the countries in terms of their agricultural history, traditions and art. Given his strong commitment to the Marco Polo project, he has been given the role of Ambassador for Cultural Exchange between Italy and China.

The Cause

Emergenza Sorrisi is a Non-Governmental Organization that works with children affected by hare lip, cleft palate, facial deformities, burns, trauma inflicted by war, cataracts and other pathologies inherent in developing countries. Emergenza Sorrisi unites 369 volunteer doctors and nurses, thanks to whom surgical misions have been realized in over 20 countries worldwide, where 3.909 children have been operated on to date and rediscovered their smile. One of the pillars of our activities is training and bringing local doctors and nurses up to date. Through our training, currently 570 professionals benefit in countries that host missions.

All of the projects run by Emergenza Sorrisi in countries in the south of the world anticipate local participation: the current situation is that there are 7 local, autonomous offices open in Benin, Congo (RDC), Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Georgia and Burkina Faso.
