The Prize

Spend a day training with paralympic athlete Oney Tapia.

When you meet Tapia will give you his signed mask to take home.

A Cuban-born athlete, he began his sports career by venturing into various disciplines, including boxing and baseball, a sport for which he moved to Italy in 2002 playing in the Old Rags of Lodi and subsequently in Montorio Veronese. Since 2009 he has dedicated himself to rugby, playing in the Treviglio Rugby Club. When he lost his sight in 2011 due to an accident at work, he did not abandon his sporting activity, instead learing the discipline of goalball (a team game in which the player pushes a ball with metal rattles into the net), but above all in athletics, where he stood out in the shot put and discus; in the latter specialty in 2016 he won gold at the Paralympic European Championships in Grosseto and silver at the Paralympic Games in Rio. In 2018 he published the autobiography Stronger Than the Dark. Nothing can stop dreams, a complete account of his human and sporting achievements.

The Cause

“WE RUN TOGETHER – Supporting our team” is a sports initiative supporting two hospitals that have been at the heart of the fight against Covid-19, the Papa Giovanni XXIII in Bergamo and the Fondazione Poliambulanza in Brescia. The funds raised from the auctions will go to the medical and nursing staff of these two hospitals that have tirelessly looked after Coronavirus patients in recent months.

This campaign has received the extraordinary support and blessing of Pope Francis who is actively involved in the initiative by donating some of his own personal highly valuable and prestigious sports items. Besides the Pope, many internationally renowned athletes, companies and sports clubs have joined the cause because we’re stronger together.

WE RUN TOGETHER is promoted and organized by four organizations that have always been committed to promoting the value of sport as a tool for inclusion, sharing, dialogue and peace. These organizations are:

Atheltica Vaticana, the first sports club in Vatican City
Sports group Fiamme Gialle (Guardia di Finanza)
“Cortile dei Gentili”, department of the Pontifical Council for Culture (VA) to promote dialogue between believers and non-believers
FIDAL-Lazio, Lazio region Athletic Federation.
