Sophia Loren by Peter Tunney

The "Movie Stars Series" by Peter Tunney are unique silkscreens based on exclusively licensed photographs of movie greats. Italian actress and international socialite, Sophia Loren, is a unique, hand-pulled silkscreen on hand-painted archival museum board and signed lower right by the artist in ink.

This one-of-a-kind piece measure 40" x 32".

For three decades artist Peter Tunney has crisscrossed the globe—from the African savannah to Wall Street boardrooms he has amassed a wealth of experiences: funny, harrowing, infused with tragedy and joy—and on the other side of these countless miles he has emerged an artist with a message, his own media machine, affirming: GRATITUDE, DON’T PANIC, THE TIME IS ALWAYS NOW, EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE AMAZING. These words are the basis of Peter Tunney’s artistic practice.

He is a dedicated explorer of our cultural lexicon, culling disparate media for images and words to assemble the collages that allow these messages to take shape from negative space. And although he works in nearly every medium of the visual art language: paint, wood, photography, printed material, found object—in a fundamental way Peter Tunney is a performance artist. His lived experience is a conduit to his work, providing meaningful translation that renders GRATITUDE not as a reductive slogan, but as a concept vital and urgent and largely missing from the cultural conversation.

The Cause

The Help A Life Foundation was formed in 2007 with the goal of housing and educating adolescent orphaned girls and providing them with a secure and supportive environment. We currently house 52 girls in a building compound capable of accommodating 56 girls and managed with a local staff of nine. Four tutorial rooms are used daily with a staff of six tutors in a range of subjects from English to Biology. 44 girls have completed high school and are at different universities throughout Ethiopia with most studying to become doctors or engineers.

These girls are selected from the surrounding villages with the collaborative effort of the local community leaders where they are housed in a gated safe group home with all living necessities provided for.

In addition, life skills training is also provided to integrate them into society as productive citizens. We currently have three self-sustaining projects, where five of the girls are managing them full time as a their careers and will be paid an according salary which allows them to integrate back into society as a proven success of Project Blue.

Much of the success of this project is due to Help a Life working directly with the local government and businesses. All of the HALF staff on Project Blue in Debre Markos are Ethiopian, and decisions are made in tandem with the local government officials.
