Appointed Knight of the Grand Cross by the President of the Republic, Aligi Sassu donated created 372 works from 1927 to 1996 to the city of Lugano; thus the Aligi Sassu and Helenita Olivares Foundation was born, which went on to organize major exhibitions all over the world, even after the painter's death on July 17, 2000, at his home in Can Marimon in Pollença (Mallorca).
