Rare sample of Nantan Meteorite.

Take home this rare Meteorite sample recovered in China near the city of Nantan.

The Nantan meteorite is a siderite or ferrous meteorite belonging to the IAB group and the MG (main group) subgroup. The descent of this fireball may have been observed in 1516, but it is still difficult to assess whether this event is connected with the first fragments recovered in  1958.
When they were collected for smelting to produce metal for China's growing industrialization it was found that meteoric iron contained too much nickel to be smelted.

The meteorite exploded as it passed through the atmosphere and the pieces scattered across an area of 28 kilometers (17 miles) long and 8 kilometers (5.0 miles) wide near the city of Nantan, Nandan County, Guangxi (China).

In 2000, pieces of the meteorite were included in an art installation for The BullRing shopping center in Birmingham, England.
