The Prize

The Armani polo shirt belonging to the Italian Paralympic National Team, worn by Monica Contrafatto for her first training session in Rio de Janeiro during the XV Paralympic Games in 2016.

Monica Contrafatto, born March 9, 1981 in Gela, Sicily, is Corporal Major Army Role of Honor, First Regiment.

On March 24, 2012, during her second mission in Afghanistan, there was an accident that caused her to lose her leg and led to a long period of rehabilitation.

Running was to become her passion and her life once more. In 2012 she recieved her first prosthesis for walking and in 2014 the prosthesis for running, giving Monica the chance to join the world of Paralympic Athletics. She started training in the 100m, category T42. She trained every day, especially at the Army Sports Center, before going to the office in Rome. On 4 May 2015, Monica Contrafatto was the first female soldier of the Italian Army to be decorated: in a solemn ceremony she received the Italian Army's Medal of Valor for the way she dealt with the attack she suffered.

She won a Paralympic bronze medal in the 100 meters T42 category at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games with a time of 16 "30.
