The Prize

Italy national cycling jersey, 2019.

On September 29 2019, on what would have been Felice Gimondi's 77th birthday, Davide Cassani's national cycling team competed in the professional world road championship in Yorkshire, wearing shirts featuring the slogan "never give up to the end". This was a tribute to the champion who passed away on August 16 of the same year, leaving a void in the world of cycling and that of national and international sport.

Born in Sedrina (Italy) on September 29 1942, Felice Gimondi cycled professionally from 1965 to 1979, winning the Giro d'Italia three times (in 1967, 1969 and 1976, with nine total podium placers: a record still unbeaten today), the Tour de France once (1965) when he was only 23 years old, and the Vuelta (in 1968). He was one of seven cyclists to win all three major stage races. In the golden years of world cycling, he raced against champions of the caliber of Eddy Merckx, winning important road races, from the World Road Championship to the Paris-Roubaix, from Milan-Sanremo to the Giro di Lombardia, which he won twice.

"Never give up to the end" ("Non mollare mai fino alla fine"): a rule that Felice Gimondi followed throughout his life, one that has left a legacy to the world of cycling.

Matteo Trentin won a silver medal in this jersey.
