The Prize

An incredible opportunity to have dinner with Lions Legend, Martin Johnson.

The first man to captain a Lions side twice - Martin Johnson occupies a unique place in our storied history.

Johnson was one of two men (alongside Willie John McBride in 1974) to lead the side to a Test Series victory in South Africa in the 20th century when they downed the Springboks in 1997.

A leader by example, Johnson was handed the captaincy for the Springbok Series in no small part due to his physical presence, having made his Lions bow four years previous, ending in rather unfortunate circumstances when concussed by a wayward punch from team-mate Martin Bayfield in the 1993 defeat to the All Blacks. But by 1997 Johnson was a different man, causing a mountain of problems for South Africa as he did throughout his Test career, beating the Springboks on six occasions for England and the Lions. A Series win formed on team mentality and ethic, Johnson was heralded as being the focal point of an impressive group harmony on their way to a roaring success.

After leading the underdogs to a famous victory, Johnson then led again four years later in Australia and, while he came close to replicating his 1997 heroics, the Series was lost 2-1. However, the way he led a difficult Tour preserved the reputation of the eight-Test Lion, who also featured 84 times for England in an illustrious international career that finished with him lifting the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

This is a superb opportunity to spend a whole evening with Martin and hear some amazing rugby and Lions stories.

The experience will be scheduled for a mutually agreeable date, time and location, by 31 December 2022. Maximum 10 people at the table. Additional costs, including travel, food and beverage to be borne by winning bidder.
